Summary
The development of a standard, open protocol for commercial building control systems has been a goal for many people over the past ten years. BACnet was the air conditioning and building controls industry response to the perceived needs of an open protocol. ASHRAE formed a Standards Project Committee (SPC13SP) in January 1987 to develop a specification for a communication protocol that would become an industry standard. The ASHRAE Standards Committee approved BACnet for release in June 1995 and by the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) in December 1995.
