Operational results of an absorption chiller for the air conditioning of a university building.

Summary

In the last few years, high-energy consumption due to air conditioning has led to a growing interest in the efficient use of energy in buildings. Simulation programmes have always been the main tools for analysing energy balances in buildings, even though the reliability of the results is often compromised by a lack of certainty that the simulations reflect real conditions. The aim of the study is to characterize the behaviour of an absorption chiller installed in a university building in Tarragona, Spain, and to establish the energy balance of the absorption unit. The results showed a transitory regime of the absorption chiller, with an average of 35 cycles on/off and an average daily cooling capacity of 19% of the nominal cooling capacity. However, as the thermal conditions of the cooling water were favourable, the average daily COP of the absorption chiller was only 13% below the nominal case.
