Summary
The free cooling function is preferable for air-cooled liquid chillers, especially at ICT locations where whole-year cooling is necessary. In the Netherlands, using free cooling in these applications provides an energy saving of circa 30 to 40%. Nowadays, many buildings also have to be air conditioned for the greater part of the year. That is why free cooling is effective for buildings and applications where cooling is required during most of the year.
