Summary

THE DESCRIPTION OF A LINEAR THERMAL WALL BY A VERY LOW ORDER SET OF ORDINARY DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS IS OPTIMIZED WITH A VIEW TO OPTIMAL CONTROL OF THERMAL SYSTEMS. FOR A GIVEN NUMBER OF EIGENMODES OF THE REDUCED SYSTEM, THE DIMENSION OF THE MINIMUM STATE REPRESENTATION IS SHOWN TO INCREASE WITH THE NUMBER OF CONSIDERED OUTPUTS. A RESTRICTED CLASS OF REDUCED TRANSFER MATRICES IS DEFINED WHICH ALLOWS THE DIMENSION OF THE STATE REPRESENTATION OF A MULTIOUTPUT SYSTEM TO BEEQUAL TO THE NUMBER OF EIGENMODES.
