THIS ARTICLE ON THE PROBLEM OF OPTIMAL SYNTHESIS OF SYSTEMS OF HEAT EXCHANGERS IS CONCERNED WITH DEVELOPING A FIRST-ORDER FEASIBLE SOLUTION AS AN INITIAL APPROXIMATION FOR SUCH AN OPTIMIZATION. THE FOLLOWING BASIC HEURISTIC IS DEVELOPED FOR THIS PURPOSE. ARRANGE THE SETS OF COLD AND HOT STREAMS IN DECREASING ORDER OFTHEIR FINAL AND INITIAL TEMPERATURES, RESPECTIVELY, AND THEN SEQUENTIALLY MATCH PAIRS OF STREAMS WITH IDENTICAL NUMBERS IN HEAT EXCHANGERS.
