Summary

Solar heating and cooling either for industrial applications or for building HVAC (Heating ventilation and air conditioning) is nowadays under intense research. Solar thermal collectors are often used, and among them, “medium temperature” ones offer a high competitiveness. Nevertheless, availability and price are broadening the applicability scope of the “high temperature” types to “medium temperature”. The use of counter-current two-phase flow with gravity stratification in parabolic trough solar collectors is recent, and stands out as a promising technology in the years to come. It is being tested for cooling/heating when feeding absorption machines, for power production feeding Rankine cycles, and even for distillation. In these applications the quantity of vapour produced is of paramount importance because it determines the efficiency and behavior of the machine fed by the solar collector. Vapour production by this novel configuration is controlled by many geometric and physical parameters and their relationship is still unexplored due to the novelty of this technology. In the present work, the effect of tilt angle of the collector, radiation heat flux distribution along the cross section, inlet mass flow and inlet sub-cooling are studied. This is carried out numerically using a 1-D transient model based on differential formulations of mass and momentum for the liquid and vapour and coupled energy balances for both fluid phases and the pipe wall. The numerical experiments are carried out with water as the working fluid. The results show that the main dimensionless group that describes vapour production is the inlet boiling number. On this result the paper offers a correlation to determine the vapour production rate.
