Performance comparison of low GWP refrigerant alternatives in a commercial refrigeration application.

Summary

To contribute to the global effort to phase down highly polluting HFC refrigerants, the refrigeration industry is dedicating significant resources in the evaluation process of alternative refrigerants. In the light commercial refrigeration segment, the most difficulties were found to replace the refrigerant R404A. Embraco, being one of major global compressor manufacturers, took part in the AHRI AREP program with performance evaluations on several refrigerant alternatives with a GWP limit below 150 that is widely used as a threshold in regional and local legislation. Except for natural refrigerants like hydrocarbons and CO2, new chemical blends, classified in the A2L safety class, were developed with GWP < 150 to meet the criteria of incoming regulations in different parts of the world. This paper shows the superiority of R290 refrigerant over commercially available A2L blends, when comparing (both theoretical and experimental) performance of a self-contained commercial appliance.
