Performance evaluation of an air-gap insulation system.

Summary

A series of heat-transfer tests was performed on an air-gap insulation concept. The concept consists of simply trapping a blanket of air around the object to be insulated. Advantages of the concept include low cost, simplicity, and benign construction materials. Documentation of the insulating performance of products based on this concept was the main objective of this experimental study. An insulation test rig was constructed that is capable of testing over the temperature range of -15 to 100 deg C.
