Summary

Although surface coolers based on conventional temperature and humidity ranges have been developed and designed successfully for air conditioning and dehumidification, they frequently fail to achieve the desired results for some extreme high temperature and high humidity conditions. In this paper operation characteristics and performance of finned tube surface cooler are investigated when it deals with the air under extreme conditions (temperature > 35℃, humidity > 30 g/kg dry air). The mathematical model of the surface cooler is established, the influence of different operating parameters on performance of the surface cooler is explored, and exhaustive analysis is carried out to optimise the structural design of the cooler under extreme operating conditions. The results suggests that for extreme conditions, the design with n=0.8~1.2 is appropriate. This tube row design can improve dehumidification capacity, heat transfer effectiveness and dehumidification effectiveness by 14.1%, 7.0% and 7.8% respectively compared to conventional structure.
