Summary
MIXING OF WATER IN A THERMAL STORAGE CYLINDER MAY CAUSE LOSSES OF UP TO 25% OF THE STORED ENERGY. INITIAL EXPERIMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT WITH A TRANSPARENT SCALE MODEL, TO INVESTIGATE THE OPTION OF A PHYSICAL SEPARATION DISC AND THE EFFICIENCY OF INLET PIPES AND DIFFUSERS. TEMPERATURES AND FLOW RATES WERE MEASURED, AND VISUAL TRACES ADDED. CHILLED WATER TESTS WERE MADE BELOW THE INVERSION TEMPERATURE. TESTS WERE REPEATED ON A FULL SIZE TANK, WITH CHILLED AND HEATED WATER, AND WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF DIFFUSER. THE RESULTS ARE REPORTED IN DETAIL. A.R.T.
