Summary

In large space buildings, intensive solar radiation and high temperature envelopes caused by a large area of transparent envelope are the most distinctive heat-source features. As the most commonly adopted terminal of jet diffusers mixes all the heat into the room air around 26ºC, radiant floor is proposed for its absorption of solar radiation and radiative heat exchange directly with a high temperature surface. And the cooling capacity of a radiant floor will also be remarkably improved compared with its application in common office or residential buildings. Moreover, the radiant floor combined with bottom supply air system is introduced as the air-conditioning mode with the temperature and humidity independent control (THIC) principle, in which air temperature and humidity are regulated independently for human thermal comfort in the occupied zone (the height within 2 m), less mixture of different heat resources and stratified air conditioning are realized, and the coil temperature for cooling can be considerably increased which means great improvement in the performance of chillers. Furthermore, the real operating performance of the new system in a pilot project at an airport terminal in Xi’an, China is investigated, which shows noteworthy improvement of energy efficiency and about 30% energy saving compared to a conventional air-conditioning system.
