PoloMag Project: Designing a compact magnetocaloric wine cooler.

Summary

The PoloMag project goal is to develop a novel, fully integrated plug-and-play magnetocaloric refrigeration system capable of controlling the temperature of a 31-bottle wine cooler cabinet between 10°C and 12°C, for an ambient temperature of 25°C, and with a thermodynamic performance comparable to that of a vapor compression system operating the same cabinet. This work presents the design phase of the project based on a system-level magnetic refrigeration model coupled to a genetic algorithm-based optimization routine to select the system components that minimize the mass of the permanent magnet of the magnetic circuit and maximize the COP. The numerical results indicate that the novel magnetocaloric system can be 70% more efficient than a commercially available vapor compression system tested in our group and 143% more efficient than our previous magnetocaloric wine cooler prototype using 48.5% less magnet mass magnet.
