Summary

EXHAUSTIVE OVERVIEW OF THE STATE OF ART IN THE FIELD OF COGENERATION. THE MAIN CATEGORIES OF COGENERATIVE SYSTEMS ARE DESCRIBED WITH EMPHASIS ON THE ASPECTS OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY, MAINTENANCE COSTS AND RELIABILITY. PARTICULAR ATTENTION IS PAID TO SYSTEMS BASED ON GAS TURBINES, BOTH WITH SIMPLE AND COMBINED CYCLES (IE, WITH A SECONDARY TURBINE DRIVEN BY STEAM FROM A BOILER, USING THE EXHAUSTED GAS, WITH OR WITHOUT AFTERBURNING). OTHER SYSTEMS SUCH AS STEAM TURBINES, PISTON ENGINES AND FUEL CELLS ARE ALSO DEALT WITH. THE PROPERTIES OF DIFFERENT FUELS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ARE ALSO EXAMINED AND A CRITERION OF EVALUATION FOR THE COST OF ENERGY OUTPUT IS PROPOSED. E. F.
