Summary

Nb3Sn strand critical current (Ic) degradation is a basic issue strongly related to ITER operating performance. The developed analytical scheme predicting Ic degradation takes into account transverse resistivity and irreversibility of strand composite. Once compared to the measurements on three types of strands in periodic bending tests, this analytical prediction almost eliminates the difference between the measurements and widely existing previous models. As transverse resistivity gets closer to the experimental value, the prediction approaches the measurement remarkably. Additionally the classical outstanding experiment for strand in a steel tube simulating the practical operating situation is interpreted with this improved scheme. It is concluded that the discrepancy between Ekin’s model result and the measurement is primarily due to the intrinsic transverse resistivity and irreversibility limit.
