Prediction of airflow pattern and air quality in an operating room.

Summary

With a numerical simulation method the airflow pattern and concentration field in an operating room was calculated and compared for different situations to find out the optimum airflow pattern for reducing the risk of infection in the operating area. The calculations show that the airflow pattern with exponential inlet velocity profile under the inlet area (higher in the center zone than in the outer zone) and unidirectional, downward flow above the operating table, as realized in the so-called Howorth system, gives better results than a uniform inlet velocity profile. Also an increase in the air flow rate gives better results. The computations were compared with experiments and showed a fairly good qualitative agreement.
