Preparation of eutectic plates for temperature-controlled boxes.

Summary

Transporting health products in autonomous temperature-controlled boxes requires the use of eutectic plates. Depending on the pre-established outside temperature profiles, configurations are defined and qualified using frozen plates stabilised at -2 °C, liquid at +5 °C or a combination of the two types of plates. If the real logistics conditions do not correspond to the prequalification of temperature, excursions can be recorded, and the configurations must be adapted. This article presents a feedback of the French army health supply establishment (ERSA) of Marolles. Solutions were initially designed and qualified to guarantee an autonomy of 72 hours and 120 hours between +2 °C and +8 °C, under hot, cold and intermediate temperature profiles, according to the NF S 99-700 standard. Temperature excursions were recorded during some shipments because the real profile was different from the one applied to qualify the configuration. To avoid these excursions, an appropriate alternative configuration was defined for each isothermal box, by the combination of frozen and not frozen eutectic plates. The solution has been adapted to the real conditions.
