Production of water and cool air, and storage of agricultural products by simple solar processes. Possibilities for application in the Sahel.

Summary

The author investigates potential improvements of the living conditions in the Sahel (the semi-arid region of central Africa) by use of simple solar processes as 1) water production by accumulation of atmospheric humidity; 2) fresh air production by direct evaporative cooling; 3) preservation of agricultural products by use of indirect solar dryers. The study rejects the first process because of cost and space required; the benefits of the two other processes in the Sahel are presented. This conclusion is confirmed by experimental results of a humidifying ventilation and a free convection indirect solar dryer.
