THE PAPER DISCUSSES THE FUNCTIONAL EFFECTS AND SIDE-EFFECTS OF REFLECTIVE GLASS FACADES, IN TERMS OF: REAL REDUCTION IN INTERNAL HEAT LOAD ; STRUCTURAL EFFECTS ON THE FACADE ; INCREASE IN HEAT LOAD EXPERIENCED BY SURROUNDING BUILDINGS ; AND DISCOMFORT AND DISABILITY GLARE. THE USE OF COMPLEX COMPUTER MODELS TO IDENTIFY POTENTIAL PROBLEMS IS DISCUSSED AND FACTORS WHICH MAY EFFECT THE SUBSEQUENT ASSESSMENT ARE PRESENTED. LABORATORY SIMULATIONS OF BUILDING PERIMETER ZONES AND FACADE DURABILITY TESTS ARE ALSO REVIEWED.
