Refrigeration and air conditioning: what's new at regulatory and technical levels?

Author(s) : BILLIARD F.

Summary

Over the last 10 years, changes occurring in the fields of refrigeration and air conditioning were certainly more significant than during the 40 previous years. The forecast changes within the next 10 years will be undoubtedly also very important. This shows that conferences either organized or co-sponsored by the IIR are of great importance in order to define what is new in the field of refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps. Regulations on environmental issues are currently the most important factor driving changes in refrigeration and air conditioning. The paper presents new regulations (ozone layer issues) as well as those which are in the drafting stages (regulations on greenhouse gases) at national and regional levels and worldwide in the refrigeration and air-conditioning fields. The paper then details certain new trends in refrigerating technologies: vapour-compression cycle systems versus alternative technologies, various components, architecture, and refrigerant selection depending on the field of application.
