AFTER A BRIEF HISTORY OF REFRIGERATION IN ALGERIA AND A REPORT OF THE ECONOMIC CONDITIONS OF ITS USE, THE PRESENT STATE OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION IS DESCRIBED WITH REFRIGERATION REQUIREMENTS UP TO YEAR 2000. EXISTING OR PLANNED REFRIGERATING CAPACITIES ARE RECORDED, GIVING THEIR AGE, LOCATION, EQUIPMENT AND USAGE CHARACTERISTICS. THE AUTHOR STRESSES THAT REFRIGERATION IS ONLY A SMALL PART OF THE ADVANCEMENT TO BE MADE. THIS SHOULD BEAR ON PRODUCTION (GROWING, REARING, PICKING, SLAUGHTERING, COLLECTION, STORAGE) AND MARKETING (PACKAGING, TRANSPORT). IN CONCLUSION, THE PRESENT SHORTCOMINGS CAN BE RAPIDLY REMEDIED BY INVESTMENTS, TRAINING, ORGANIZATION AND REGULATIONS. J.L.
