Summary

Widespread use of air conditioning has raised comfort but brings with it new pathologies with socio-economic impacts. The article reviews the links between air conditioning, airborne microorganisms and health on-site investigations show the value of state-of-the-art filtration and explore the sick building syndrome and dose-effect relationships. Means of counting airborne microorganisms, as a way of assessing exposure, are discussed.
