Summary

Starting about 10 years ago, manufacturers have sought to produce transport vehicles to accommodate two standard pallets of width 1.20 m requiring an overall width of 2.44 m. Since the Highway Code limits vehicle width to 2.50 m this leaves a wall thickness of only about 30 mm. Other national regulations and international agreements further limit the design. The methods and materials used to obtain the authorized K-value, whilst giving the necessary wall strength and rigidity, will be described. The success of these designs for future temperature-controlled road transport, and for long journeys (i.e. Europe to the Middle East) remains to be demonstrated.
