Risk-based inspection improves safety of pressure equipment.

Type of article: Article
Summary
To counter the costs, in capital, income, human and environmental terms, of equipment failure a new concept of risk-based inspection is suggested for under pressure equipment. It requires a detailed analysis of each part of the plant, including sections of pipelines. Two assessments are required, the likelihood of failure and its consequence. By combining these, a matrix is formed which indicates high, medium and low risk areas. The methodology involved is illustrated. Not only will this method decrease the risk of serious failure, but inspection and maintenance costs will be utilised more effectively or even reduced. D.W.H.
