Summary

Due to the fact that greenhouse gases emissions should be decreased, entities like institutes and manufacturers are proposing new refrigerants to substitute the HFCs. Legislators are analyzing the possibility to limit the GWP of the fluids in stationary application as already made in the A/C mobile application. New HFO fluids having a low GWP and natural refrigerants like carbon dioxide (R-744) and Hydrocarbons (R-290 and R-1270) are proposed as candidate/alternative to replace the existing HFCs. This paper reports the comparison analysis of the R-290 and R-1270 against R-404A and R-407C and analyzes the results of the experimental tests carried on scroll compressors in refrigeration and heat pumps applications. Finally the main requirements to comply with the European safety standards using hazardous fluids are reported highlighting the compressor modifications required.
