Summary
SF6 IS PRACTICALLY THE ONLY INSULATING MEDIUM BEING USED FOR THE DESIGN OF CIRCUIT BREAKERS IN VIEW OF ITS MANY ADVANTAGES, INCLUDING OPERATIONAL INDEPENDENCE, HIGH BREAKING PERFORMANCE AND NEGLIGIBLE MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS. UNFORTUNATELY, IT IS DIFFICULT TO EMPLOY AT EXTREMELY LOW TEMPERATURES DUE TO LIQUEFACTION PHENOMENA. THE ARTICLE PRESENTS A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE MOST RECENT ADVANCES, PARTICULARLY FOR CURRENT INTERRUPTION AND DESIGN OF BLAST NOZZLES, USING PURE SF6 AT LOW PRESSURE (0.23 MEGAPASCAL GAUGE) OR A MIXTURE OF SF6 AND NITROGEN. A LINE OF CIRCUIT BREAKERS HAS BEEN DEVELOPED IN THE 145 TO 800 KILOVOLT RANGE WITH AN INTERRUPTING CAPACITY OF 50 KILOAMPERES FOR OPERATION AT A TEMPERATURE OF -50 DEG C.
