Should all refrigeration systems have oil separators?

Author(s) : SNYDER D.

Type of article: Article

Summary

The author offers reasons why most compression refrigeration systems would benefit with the addition of a discharge oil separator. The action of an oil separator is explained and also the problems caused by the condensation of refrigerant in the separator during off periods, which can lead to crankcase oil foaming on start up. This can be overcome by installing delayed action solenoid valves in oil return lines and by heating the separator. Multiple compressor systems with common discharge can be accomodated using a common separator and oil reservoir returning oil to individual compressors via crankcase float valves or electronic level sensing devices.
