Summary

The paper provides analysis from the history-of-science point of view of the process of formation of the scientific school of low temperature physics and condensed matter which was founded in the thirties in Kharkov by the well-known soviet physicist Lev Shubnikov. The contribution of Shubnikov's school into this field and the creation of new branches are described.
