A NUMERICAL TECHNIQUE FOR THE OPTIMIZATION OF LOW-LOSS CRYOSTA TS IS DESCRIBED. IT ALLOWS THE INFLUENCE OF THE NUMBER AND POSITIONS OF THE RADIATION SHIELDS TO BE INVESTIGATED, AND THE EFFECTS OF OTHER HEAT INPUTS TO BE EXPLORED. THE PERFORMANCE OF A 100 DM3 VAPOUR SHIELDED HELIUM CRYOSTAT IS COMPARED WITH THE NUMERICAL SIMULATION.
