SIMPLY ENGINEERING.

Type of article: Article
Summary
THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THAT A SUCCESSFUL AIR-CONDITIONING SYSTEM SHOULD BE SIMPLE IN DESIGN. TO MEET THIS CRITERIA, HE SUGGESTS A CENTRAL PLANT, TERMINAL RE-HEAT, LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS THE BEST FOR BUILDINGS UP TO 8,500 M2 FLOOR AREA. SIMPLICITY SHOULD INCLUDE DX COOLING WITH AIR-COOLED CONDENSING UNITS, USING SEVERAL COMPRESSORS. TERMINAL HEATING WATER COILS ARE CONTROLLED BY TWO-POSITION VALVES AND THERMOSTATS HAVING AN ANTICIPATORY FEATURE. SUPPLY AND RETURN AXIAL FANS ARE MORE RELIABLE AND SIMPLER FOR NOISE CONTROL. SUCH SYSTEMS HAVE PROVED CHEAPER TO OWN AND OPERATE THAN CORRESPONDING VAV OR INDUCTION SYSTEMS, MAINLY DUE TO LOW INSTALLATION, COMMISSIONING AND MAINTENANCE COSTS. D.W.H.
