Summary
The gradual prevalence of ski industry leads to the development of artificial snowmaking technology. As a core component in artificial snowmaker, swirl nozzle is used to provide atomization droplets. Atomization droplet size and velocity directly affect the snow quality. In this research, the flow and atomization process of swirl nozzle is simulated by VOF-DPM approach, and the results agree well with experiments. The effect of inlet pressure on droplet size, droplet velocity and other atomization characteristics is investigated. It is found that Sauter mean diameter decreases with the increase of inlet pressure. The rising pressure enhances the aerodynamic instability between liquid and air, promotes the liquid breakup, and shortens the liquid breakup time. The velocity of liquid film and droplets both increases with the rising inlet pressure. When the inlet pressure increases from 0.6 MPa to 1.4 MPa, the velocity of liquid film and droplets increases by 58.8% and 52.2%.
