Summary

A NEW APPROACH FOR OBTAINING LEAD ALLOY FILMS WITH SMALL GRAIN SIZE IS REPORTED SO AS A DETAILED STUDY OF THE PREPARATION OF SPUTTERED NBN FILMS AT AMBIENT TEMPERATURES. TWO METHODS FOR TREATING THE SURFACE OF A NIOBIUM BASE ELECTRODE IN ORDER TO OBTAIN GOOD TUNNELING CHARACTERISTICS ARE DESCRIBED (SPUTTER ETCHING BEFORE GROWING THE BARRIER). THE DESIGN OF A S-N-S JOSEPHSON DEVICE WHICH EXHIBITS JOSEPHSON BEHAVIOR FROM 19 K DOWN TO 2 K IS REPORTED. THE VARIOUS NOISE SOURCES IN SQUIDS ARE STUDIED, SPECIALLY THE < 1/F > NOISE. THE APPLICATION OF JOSEPHSON DEVICE TO JOSEPHSON DIGITAL LOGIC CIRCUITS IS DISCUSSED. J. V.
