Summary
Reducing and optimization of the energy consumption in the residential sector is an important issue in the context of the global warming effect. Using new technologies, including control technologies, the residential sector has a big potential for the reduction of CO2 emissions and most investments in buildings can be expected to pay back through reduced energy bills and also through reduced peak electricity demand while maintaining suitable user comfort at reduced investment and operating costs. Existing private householders use a number of energy sources to power their living and house comfort. The development of intelligent control systems has improved the efficiency of control systems for the management of indoor environment including user preferences. One promising approach is Model Predictive Control (MPC) which uses a building model for optimization purposes. Compared to other control strategies it employs a mathematical, physically based model of the controlled process, and can thus account for non-linear and complex interactions in multiple-input-multiple-output systems. A heating/cooling strategy is formulated for the next several hours, based on predictions of several disturbances (weather conditions, internal gains: occupants, appliances etc.), time-dependencies of the costs (for example electricity price), or of the constraints (for example thermal comfort range, reducing peak electricity demand). This paper discuss cheap and less invasive solutions for smart metering and MPC control system for existing residential buildings which will increase the efficiency of the energy use, albeit without penalizing the occupants' comfort.
