Summary

The HOMES (Homes and buildings for Optimized Management of Energy and Services) collaborative program is designed to create solutions -based on active control- to achieve optimal energy performance of each building. This four-year (2008-2012) program is supported by the French Agency for Innovation (OSEO) and led by Schneider Electric. Its thirteen members are manufacturers and researchers with synergistic expertise in building management: CEA, CIAT, CSTB, Delta Dore, EDF, Idea, Philips Lighting, Radiall, Schneider Electric, Somfy, STMicroelectronics, Watteco and Wieland Electric. The program has delivered a large set of results: studies, prototypes, experimentations and dissemination actions. A comprehensive validation protocol, mixing simulation, test platforms and pilot sites has been set up to validate the feasibility and evaluate the performance in terms of energy efficiency gains and in terms of perceived comfort. Assessments of energy efficiency gains from simulations on a set of pilot buildings range from 25% to over 50%. The objective of this paper is to present some of the key findings and experimental results of the HOMES program, focusing on residential, and especially very highly insulated individual houses (passive houses), which might represent the future of individual houses. Knowledge concerning HVAC efficiency will be also discussed: we will detail the HVAC system new control functions, especially concerning the optimization of the thermal water transfer fluid between production machines and thermal emission, and will provide the analysis of performance improvement in terms of comfort and energy efficiency.
