Summary

THE PAPER GIVES AN EXHAUSTIVE ANALYSIS OF THE POSSIBLE WAYS OF UTILIZING SOLAR ENERGY IN REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING. SEVERAL TYPES OF PLANE SOLAR COLLECTORS ARE CONSIDERED (SINGLE OR DOUBLE GLAZING, NORMAL OR SELECTIVE SURFACES) ; THESE COLLECTORS CAN BE USED WITH RANKINE CYCLES COUPLED TO CONVENTIONAL REFRIGERATION CYCLES, OR WITH ABSORPTION REFRIGERATING MACHINES. DIFFERENT SYSTEMS ARE ALSO CONSIDERED, SUCH AS THE INTERMITTENT ABSORPTION CYCLE, THE OPEN ABSORPTION CYCLE AND THE HUMIDIFICATION-DEHUMIDIFICATION CYCLE ; IN THIS LATTER SYSTEM THE AIR IS COOLED AND DEHUMIDIFIED BY A SUITABLE COMBINATION OF SATURATION PROCESSES (TO LOWER THE TEMPERATURE) AND MOISTURE ABSORPTION BY MEANS OF REGENERATED ABSORBING SOLUTIONS (TO LOWER THE HUMIDITY). EACH OF THESE SYSTEMS IS CRITICALLY EXAMINED AND FOR EACH OF THEM A MEDIUM DAILY COEFFICIENT OF PERFORMANCE FOR TYPICAL SUMMER CONDITIONS IS INDICATED, TOGETHER WITH THE G EFFECT PER DAY. E. F.
