Summary

US., 23, N8, AUG. 1981, 31-35, 7 FIG., 1 TABL. THE A. DESCRIBES THE INSTALLATION AT THE CALVERT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. THE SYSTEM UTILIZES THE CHILLER TO PROVIDE 100% OF THE HEAT RECOVERY FROM THE INTERNAL AREAS. IN ADDITION, PERIMETER HEAT PUMPS WERE USED TO PROVIDE HEATING AND COOLING FOR THE EXTERIOR PATIENT AREAS. SOLAR ENERGY PROVIDED THE ADDITIONAL HEAT FOR THE BUILDING. SOLAR ENERGY WAS ESPECIALLY COST EFFECTIVE IN THIS APPLICATION BECAUSE THE WATER TEMPERATURE IN THE COLLECTORS WAS LOW 299.7K (26.7 DEG C). THIS LOW WATER TEMPERATURE KEPT THE COLLECTOR EFFICIENCY BETWEEN 50-60% DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. CALVERT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL OPERATES TODAY IN TESTIMONY TO THE FACT THAT SOLAR SYSTEMS CAN BE COST EFFECTIVE. THIS ARTICLE INCLUDES SEVERAL DIAGRAMS SHOWING BASIC ARRANGEMENTS OF HEAT RECOVERY AND SOLAR SYSTEMS.E. W. S.
