Summary

The daily time lag between the availability of the solar thermal energy and hot water requirements is most of the times addressed with energy storage systems; nevertheless, the seasonal time lag is rarely explored leading to the unfounded exclusion of solar thermal systems for space heating.

This paper presents a study of the potential of a seasonal solar energy storage system using a well insulated water tank for the acclimatization of a house in a rural area, only varying two crucial parameters: the area of the solar collectors and the volume of the storage tank.

With this initial study, the storage of thermal energy during the summer for further use in the winter is proposed. This approach deserves more investigation due to the its potential in the reduction of the consumption of the fossil fuels for the room heating and to avoid the excessive cutting of native trees.
