Summary

FREE CONVECTION IS STUDIED IN A POROUS LAYER, THE PERMEABILITY OF WHICH IS NOT UNIFORM, DEPENDING ON THE HORIZONTAL COORDINATE. A GENERAL METHOD IS SET UP TO ESTIMATE THE CRITERION FOR ONSET OF CONVECTION. SOME APPLICATIONS ARE PRESENTED FOR PERIODIC VARIATIONS OF PERMEABILITY. THEY SHOW THE EQUIVALENCE BETWEEN LAYERS WITH SHORT SCALE PERMEABILITY FLUCTUATIONS AND HOMOGENEOUS ANISOTROPIC MEDIA. FINALLY, SOME NUMERICAL COMPUTATIONS WITH GALERKIN'S METHOD ARE DERIVED ON STREAMLINE PATTERNS AND OVERALL HEAT TRANSFER.
