Summary

Stability measurements have been made on a large aluminium stabilized conductor designed for use in a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) coil. The conductor has been built to carry 50 kiloampères at 1.8 K and in 4.6 T field. Test results demonstrate good agreement with a new dynamic stability model. The balance of time-dependent heat generation during current diffusion and time-dependent cooling to the helium produces three new features of stability: 1) a threshold current for propagation; 2) large propagation velocities; 3) a finite length travelling normal zone.
