Summary

This study demonstrates the possibility of using a free-cooling system with an open-type cooling tower. Free cooling systems are energy saving systems without chiller operation when the ambient temperature is relatively low and the building needs chilled water for cooling. The prediction method for free-cooling performance with commercially available cooling towers is described in this paper with the theoretical formulae which have been proposed to predict the performance of the cooling tower. The water temperature and the flow were measured in summer and winter in order to derive the parameters and the characteristics of open-type cooling towers. The predicted inlet and outlet water temperatures agreed well with the measurements, and also showed that the free-cooling system with a cooling tower may be used in Japan.
