Summary

Describes the 40-m high atrium, covered in heat-reflective glass with a floor area of 3226 m2 and a volume of 62,000 m3. 60% of the interior floor area is covered with tropical and subtropical plants and part is used as a restaurant. Abundant sunlight is required for healthy plant growth, while a comfortable environment has to be suplied for occupants. During the design stage a computer-simulated examination was made of the potential conditions. Measurements were conducted after construction. Sunshades, natural exhaust ventilation of the hot air in the upper part of the atrium and a floor cooling system ensure a comfortable environment.
