Taking advantage of the screw compressor side port.

Author(s) : STEGMANN R.

Summary

The article discusses the compression behaviour of a screw compressor and, in particular, the role of the side port, which, with the general geometry of the compressor, sets the compressor's own suction-discharge pressure ratio, which does not necessarily correspond to real suction/discharge conditions of the refrigerating circuit. The side port must be set for each use and for each refrigerant used. Efficiency can be improved with an intermediate suction inlet involving different economizers, which the article describes in detail. Attention is also given to two-stage compressors, which at high compression ratios are more efficient than single-stage compressors with intermediate suction and an economizer.
