Summary
This article is the Spanish translation of an article presented at the IIR conference in Portoroz, Slovenia (see the Bulletin of the IIR, reference 2007-1580). Magneto-caloric heat pumps are investigated to exploit the intrinsic high efficiency of magnetocaloric materials (MCM). Yet, only a few teams have actually designed a machine that delivers superior performance to standard gas compression systems. The design of a magneto-caloric unit, as any technological device is a trade off between: several physical phenomena that compete. For example, the larger the volume, the more mass of MCM, the more potential power, yet the more difficult it is to magnetize. Another example is the contact surface area between the magnetocaloric material and the heat transport fluid: increasing the surface means increasing pressure drops, and the fluid pumping power quickly becomes bigger than the cooling power generated. The optimum point determined by theory, for example the temperature span of the equipment, and what is practically realizable, the temperature cycle of the MCM with the active magnetic regenerator cycle. What is practically realizable and what an industrial can commit to build in several hundreds of thousands of units. This paper presents the various links and interactions between the magnetic, thermo-hydraulic, mechanical, and magneto-caloric sub-systems and their impact on the conception and realization of a magnetic heat pumping.
