Temperature cross-based criterion for multipass heat exchanger design.

Type of article: Article

Summary

Customarily, the log mean temperature difference correction factor is used to screen alternative heat exchanger designs. Designs with unacceptably low correction factor values are discarded. A more fundamental criterion, based on temperature cross, is proposed to design multipass exchangers. The charts emphasize the need to use the temperature cross as a design criterion. A simple equation in terms of dimensionless parameter is presented to estimate number of shells. An innovative graphic procedure based on this equation is also described.
