Summary

THE AUTHORS HAVE INVESTIGATED EXPERIMENTALLY THE I-V CHARACTERISTICS OF COPPER AND PLATINUM WIRES COOLED BY SATURATED HELIUM VAPOUR AT ABOUT 4.2 K. THEY HAVE ANALYSED THE I-V CHARACTERISTICS FEATURES ASSOCIATED WITH FORMATION OF TEMPERATURE-ELECTRIC DOMAINS. THE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE, SHAPE AND SIZE ARE COMPARED WITH THOSE CALCULATED FROM THE SOLUTION OF THE HEAT EQUATION WITH ALLOWANCE FOR REAL HEAT TRANSFER CONDITIONS AND ENERGY DISSIPATION MECHANISMS IN THE BULK METAL.
