The cryogenic system of VLHC.
Author(s) : FOSTER G. W., GEYNISMAN M., KLEBANER A., et al.
Summary
The cryogenic system for the Very Large Hadron Collider (VLHC), a 233km circular accelerator of 40 TeV is described. The twin-aperture superconducting transmission line magnets are cooled by pressurized supercritical helium at 4.5-6 K. The fluid operates just outside the critical region expanding the helium stream as it passes through the transmission line, producing a large effective heat capacity. The helium distribution system is designed to distribute refrigeration to the magnet system with a minimal temperature variation. Cryogens are fed from six refrigerator plants spaced at 38km intervals around the ring.
