Summary

THE FOULING PROCESS IN COLD WATER PIPES IS DESCRIBED, AND A CORRELATION WITH FLOW RATE IS SHOWN BASED ON THE COOLING TOWER MODEL OF TABOREK. THE EFFECT OF THE FLOW RATE AND OF THE WALL OR SURFACE TEMPERATURE ON THE ASYMPTOTIC FOULING FACTOR IS SUMMARIZED IN A FEW SIMPLE EQUATIONS. ALONG WITH HEAT-EXCHANGE RESISTANCE, THIS EFFECT LEADS TO A REDUCED COEFFICIENT OF HEAT EXCHANGE. BASED ON THE NUMERICAL DESCRIPTION OF TYPICAL FOULING CHARACTERISTICS, HIGHER FLOW RATES ARE CALLED FOR.
