The evaluation of facade performance.

Summary

The quality of modern building is often expressed by the facade. Indeed Facade Engineering is becoming a discipline in its own right. Complex facades bring complex problems, in particular that of interstitial and surface condensation. Traditional methods of calculation such as that described in section A of the CIBSE Guide are likely to be found wanting. An alternative might be to use a general purpose computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program to model fluid movement, radiant exchange and heat transfer within the solid fabric. The paper presents a review of available techniques including CFD. It is concluded that there is the potential for significant errors in the calculation of the conduction of heat through large cavities if air movement within the cavity is not taken into consideration.
