Summary

A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF THE APPARATUS AND TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED TO ENABLE IN SITU HIGH VACUUM TREATMENT OF THE SAMPLE SURFACE, WITHOUT AN EXCESSIVE HEAT LOAD ON THE HELIUM 3 REFRIGERATOR DURING MEASUREMENTS OF THE KAPITZA CONDUCTANCE. THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS ARE IN EXCELLENT AGREEMENT WITH PREVIOUS RESULTS, AT HIGHER TEMPERATURES, FOR SIMILARLY PREPARED SURFACES. THE TEMPERATURE DEPENDENCE OF THE MEASURED HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT SHOWS A CLEAR MAXIMUM AT 1 K. HOWEVER THE LARGE MAGNITUDE OF THE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT, SUGGESTS THAT SOME ALTERNATIVE MECHANISM MAY DOMINATE THE KAPITZA CONDUCTANCE, EVEN TO < CLEAN > SURFACES.
