Type of article: Article

Summary

IN 1935, FOR THE FIRST TIME, SULZER INSTALLED THE LABYRINTH PISTON IN AN OIL-FREE AIR COMPRESSOR, WHICH HAD BEEN DEVELOPED ORIGINALLY FOR MACHINES WITH SUPERHEATED VAPOUR. THE ARTICLE PRESENTS THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THESE COMPRESSORS WITH LABYRINTH PISTONS. IT COMPARES THE POWER ABSORBED BY A DRY COMPRESSOR WITH WATERTIGHT RINGS MADE FROM PLASTIC, WITH THAT OF A COMPRESSOR WITH LABYRINTH PISTONS OF THE SAME PERFA. FINALLY, IT PRESENTS THE DEVELOPMENT OF FRICTIONLESS SHAFT SEALING, AROUND THE PISTON ROD, FOR THE CASES WHEN NO GAS LEAK IS TOLERATED.
