Summary

By means of a combined simulation method, consisting of thermal building simulation including CFD, the air exchange in naturally ventilated rooms was investigated. The usual basic set of equations of momentum, mass and energy balance was extended by an equation taking into account the age of the air and additional calculation procedures for air exchange and energy efficiency. Several types of windows and geometries were modelled and simulated concerning the overall, the hygienic and the energy-efficient air renewal rate in a room. The results are presented for ventilation over short periods and continuous ventilation.
